Who would have thought that a place that was first visited as long ago as 1525 and whose famous Hudson River was first traversed in 1609 by its namesake, Henry Hudson. The Dutch made New York their permanent settlement in 1624 and was known as New Netherland until the English conquered it 40-years later and renamed New York after the Duke of York.
